Inside the Modern High-Tech Boardroom

The executive boardroom is no longer an island unto itself. "We no longer take a room or project approach," says one AV integrator. "It's more of a platform approach so it crosses the entire enterprise." With more and more collaboration technologies incorporated into boardrooms, many organizations want to ensure investments impact more than board meetings. Read more.

 Now Hear This: ICIF Podcast

Meet the 2015 Michael Vergauwen Scholarship Award winner and Directors of the International Communications Industries Foundation (ICIF) Board Kevin Kelly, President and COO of Stampede, and Jeffrey Lipp, CTS-D, Principal Consultant of Lipp AV Design. The three discuss workforce development, the ICIF's new grant program and advice for newcomers to the AV industry. Listen now.

The Scholarship That Shaped an Influencer

The first recipient of the International Communications Industries Foundation's (ICIF) Michael Vergauwen Scholarship, Dawn Meade, CTS® — known to many by her social media handle @AVDawn — is a perfect example of someone who took the resources available to her and ran with them. Since earning her Master of Science Degree in Technology Management/Information Systems and her MBA from the University of Maryland, she has supplemented her day job as Director of Marketing for Net-AV with writing for industry publications, serving on InfoComm committees, mentoring and encouraging women as a member of the Women of InfoComm Network (WIN), and more. Read about her journey and nominate an aspiring AV professional for a Michael Vergauwen Scholarship.

 ICIF Grant Sponsor Sees Results

When Joe Fong, Deputy Managing Director at Electronics & Engineering Pte Ltd. in Singapore, discovered the ICIF Grant Program, he was excited to take his company's commitment to workforce development to a new level. His company had already been promoting the industry to students at Nanyang Polytechnic, a nearby university. Fong believes all AV companies need to play a role in developing new leaders.

"We are proud to see the next generation willing to join this industry with career paths in design, consultancy, system programming, engineering, sales, project management and facility management," says Fong. "We need to jointly promote and raise the standard of professionals in this industry to benefit the clients, the companies and the professionals of the AV industry."

The ICIF Grant Program is designed to mentor and engage talented individuals in the AV industry. Through the program, Fong and Electronics & Engineering Pte Ltd. are helping students earn valuable experience and gain a competitive edge over other aspiring AV professionals. Learn more about the program and how to be a sponsor.

 From Essentials to CTS

When Matthew Hale joined Focus 21, the Surrey, U.K.-based AV integrator and service provider, his employer had news for him: All of its AV personnel were required to be CTS-certified. Unfazed, Hale got to work, first completing InfoComm University's Essentials of AV course, then the AV Technologist training, and finally embarking on full-fledged CTS training. He received his CTS certification a year after joining the company — around the time Focus 21 achieved its InfoComm Audiovisual Provider of Excellence (APEx) status.

"Following the path from Essentials, to Technologist, to CTS was a positive way to gain and apply knowledge in stages," says Hale, CTS. "I can recommend this professional development pathway to anyone in the AV industry. It has helped me to gain confidence in myself as an AV professional, and has solidified the trust that my clients have in me and the company for which I work." Read the full story.

 Public Review: Cable Labeling Standard

Tune in at 8 a.m. EST on Dec. 4 for a live town hall meeting about InfoComm International's upcoming cable labeling standard. We need AV experts like you to read the draft standard and share your opinions with us. In this interactive webinar, you will have the opportunity to ask questions and submit your comments directly to the task group working on the cable labeling standard. So have a microphone ready or feel free to text away. Reserve your spot.

 Certification Matters

When Jennifer Hu, CTS, graduated and got her first job in the AV industry, her first question for her new employer was, "Is there anything I should do before I start?" The response? Begin studying for her CTS certification. Now, a little more than a year since starting at the San Diego office of Idibri, this mechanical engineering graduate has earned her CTS and is talking about studying for her CTS-D. Read more.
