Administrators at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, MI, pursued a high-tech approach to surgeon training whereby medical professionals could essentially practice their skills in a virtual reality lab under the supervision of experts.
Though medical simulators had been in use on a limited scale, the Marcia and Eugene Applebaum Surgical Learning Center at William Beaumont Hospital is the first in the world to provide leading-edge surgical training and medical simulation technology so comprehensively.
Beaumont’s Surgical Learning Center relies on advanced AV equipment and systems in a bioskills lab with 10 stations where surgeons-in-training practice their craft; two mock operating rooms equipped with an electronic, interactive patient simulator; and conferencing spaces and a high-tech classroom with worldwide distance learning capabilities.
