The Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China, sees the largest-ever implementation of the Dataton WATCHOUT™ multi-display presentation and production system in a single location.

In total, more than two-dozen of the Expo’s pavilions aimed at gathering and presenting the world’s cultures are making use of WATCHOUT, including the host China pavilion, the City of the Future, the City of Planets, the City of Dreams, and the national pavilions of Japan, Brazil, Singapore, Germany, Spain, Switzerland and the UAE. Other pavilion designs employing WATCHOUT include the State Grid Pavilion, World Trade Centers Association, General Motors, the Urban Planet Pavilion and the Europe Pavilion. The Macau Pavilion alone is using over 130 WATCHOUT-equipped computers to produce its AV show.
A large number of AV consultants, systems integrators and rental companies have descended on Shanghai from all over the world to implement their designs. Dataton’s longtime partner in China, Audiovisual Technique has provided local technical support.
“Shanghai is very proud to be hosting the largest-ever World Expo, and we at Audiovisual Technique are very proud to be helping make the Expo a success by taking so many of the pavilions’ AV systems to the next level with Dataton WATCHOUT,” comments Kenneth Cheung at Audiovisual Technique.
“Visitors to the Expo will be surprised, delighted, astounded and amazed by the designs they will see. Dataton’s partners have really stepped up to the plate in terms of their designs, and as a result, this has been an incredibly demanding and exciting project to work on.”
“Benefiting from over a decade of continuous development, Dataton WATCHOUT combines multiple projectors or other display devices with standard computer and network technology to create breathtaking presentations of almost any size. The production computer uses a familiar timeline-based user interface to build each audiovisual ‘show,’ then distributes the relevant media files to the display computers to run the show.
“Because WATCHOUT utilizes the full resolution of all projectors, flat panels, video cubes and LED screens, the highest image quality is maintained, regardless of the size of the total display area. Displays can also be arranged at any angle, shape or form, while overlapping projected images are edge-blended automatically. The durability, reliability and flexibility of this product is reflected in this amazing project which proves to be the largest deployment of WATCHOUT in a single installation in the product’s ten year history,” says Michael Engström, Director of Sales at Dataton.
Jianmin Xiao, President of Shanghai Foremost Multimedia Co., Ltd is involved in the dome projection area at the Urban Planet Pavilion and explains, “Here, we have a 20 meter-wide inner dome spherical screen that uses 11 Panasonic D1000 projectors. With German made domeprojection auto calibration technology, we are able to obtain accurate and wonderful geometry correction data. It's easily imported into WATCHOUT software (using its open protocols) to produce a highly accurate display inside the sphere. Dataton WATCHOUT is really the best multi-display software that I have ever used. Its good performance and easy-to-use features are perfect for digital video display in curved dome screens."
In total there are over 200 organisations participating at the Expo, which covers a land area larger than the state of Monaco. The event is expected to attract over 70 million visitors.
