Six Common Questions About CTS Renewal
Why isn’t renewal automatic?
The CTS, CTS-D and CTS-I are professional level certifications requiring continuous education to stay current in the field. You need 30 RUs every three years. Then simply submit your completed application with the fee and any supporting documentation to renew.
How can I renew if I don’t have any money to spend on training?
There are many free RU programs available on the RU listing page.
How can I renew if I can’t travel?
There are many RU programs you can take at your desktop, and an increasing number of regional programs such as the Denver RU event.
Isn’t my company in charge of renewing my CTS?
The CTS is your personal certification and your responsibility. It stays with you. Please keep track of your credential expiration dates and complete the renewal application prior to expiration. You don't want to lose it!
Why didn’t I get a renewal notice?
This probably means we have outdated contact information about you. Have you changed jobs recently? Changed your email address? Changed your name? We send out six notices — five electronically; one postcard — and phone calls starting a year ahead of your certification renewal date. If you haven’t heard from us, we might not know how to reach you. Please send your updated information to certification@infocomm.org.
How can I find out how many RUs I have?
All InfoComm-registered programs are on your transcript, which is at www.infocomm.org/transcript or linked to your dashboard (top of the InfoComm home page). You may have enough RUs just from InfoComm-registered courses. However, chances are, you’ve also taken other courses from the list of 988 possible programs. Review the list, gather your documentation as needed and be sure to complete your renewal application before the expiration date.
InfoComm Design Programs and the CTS-D
Confused about which InfoComm courses will help you prepare for the CTS-D? Here is a quick tutorial.
InfoComm has six courses to help you:
DES201 Design Online
DES204 AV Math for Design Online
DES212 AV Design Principles: Environment
DES213 AV Design Principles: Infrastructure
DES312 Applied AV Design
DES314 CTS-D Prep/DES315 CTS-D Prep Virtual Classroom
To decide which course is right for you, consider the following:
- Did you get your CTS under the old system or in the current system? If you took the exam under the old system, and you never took Design Online, start with DES201 Design Online.
- Has it been a long time since you focused on math formulas? Math is critical to the job and a big part of the exam content outline. InfoComm has two math courses, GEN104 AV Math Online and DES204 AV Math for Design Online. Also, look for our upcoming math webinars.
- Have you taken DES212, 213 and 312? If possible, you should take them in sequence. Think of them as Design 1, 2 and 3.
- How much review do you need before the exam? DES314/315 CTS-D Prep is a review course, delivered either in a classroom or virtually. It is based on content from DES212 AV Design Principles: Environment, DES213 AV Design Principles: Infrastructure, and DES312 Applied AV Design. CTS-D Prep alone will not cover everything on the exam content outline, but it will review terminology, math formulas and test-taking strategies.
Note — DES210 Elements of Design is not listed above because it is not designed for the CTS-D candidate and is geared for the clients who plan to hire a CTS-D.
